The Latino community is core to the cultural fabric and economic engine of the United States. But we’ve been disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, which has exposed and worsened existing inequalities.

Momento Latino works to create meaningful, systemic change for the Latino community in three key areas:

Health

Even before the pandemic, we faced challenges accessing quality, culturally-sensitive healthcare. Now, Latinos are dying at 2x the rate of the rest of the population due to COVID-19. We’re hungry for expert information and advice.

Economy

Though Latinos represent 34% of essential workers, 65% of Latino households have faced job loss, reduced hours or wages, or lost our self-employment.

The majority of Latino households have school-aged children and often face a digital divide. The shift to remote learning could leave a generation of Latino youth behind.

As #COVID19 vaccinations begin to roll out, #Latinx doctors are reporting many questions from predominantly Latinx patients - including an alarming amount related to conspiracy theories about the vaccine. Now that approval of the Smithsonian #LatinoMuseum has been blocked by one vote in the Senate, what’s next for the future of the Museum? #MomentoLatino founder @henryrmunozlll told @aldianews that there is a significant effort to get the Museum pushed through before the end of the year. “I’ve always said in my involvement with the museum that what’s good for the Latino community is good for the future of the Smithsonian because much of their future audience base will come from the Latino community,” he said. Black and brown doctors are continuing to struggle to face #COVID19. "I have never taken care of more Spanish speakers, undocumented patients, #Latinx patients or Black patients as I have during the pandemic,” said Dr. Susan Lopez for @huffpost. Black and Latinx people take up only 10.8% of the physician workforce, but make up a much greater percentage of those in COVID wards. #Tyson Foods has been accused of misleading interpreters to deliver incorrect information about a #COVID19 outbreak at an Iowa plant to Spanish-speaking employees, leading to the infection of a third of workers. Management were instructed to tell the interpreters that "everything is fine," according to a complaint filed on behalf of the families of four workers who passed from the virus. And according to a lawsuit, managers at the plant placed bets on how many workers would be infected or killed by the outbreak. Today is #TransgenderDayOfRemembrance. #DidYouKnow that trans Latina women have been at the heart of the #LGBTQ+ rights movement since its inception? Trans Latina activist Sylvia Rivera was one of the leaders of the #Stonewall marches. Transgender women of color face an epidemic of violence.
